Hello , I recently tried rhubarb leaves fermenting in water for 3 weeks for spraying on white fly / , however , the smell was so bad decided to get rid of it
Aah that smell!! That's why it works! -That's if you wanted a Purin. A better way would have been to make a decoction by boiling the leaves and then straining them through a sieve and diluting them 10/1 -This would still have been effective. BioD Meeting back in February recommended allowing sorrel or plantain to grow through roses to attract blackfly and aphids away from roses. Allowed a very deep rooted sorrel to do this through a shrub rose (mainly because I couldn't get the wrtched thing out when I weeded!! -It works. Covered in Aphids and Blackfly and the rose is perfect. -How's that for companion planting?!!
Sorry, had to stop -Alarm went off reminding me Crab had finished boiling. First Crab Salad of the season tonight Yum! Actually it's been raining here since lunchtime so not 'sit outside' weather. Went off to see D Day preperations as we live near the Beaches and it is fantastic. They are really pushing the boat out for the 75th anniversary. Looking forward to taking part this w/e at Festival Swing O/H birthday Saturday -his 75th too!
Anyway -To work -Here is the Lunar Calender 5-19th June
5/6th June - from 1.59pm on 5th Flower Days with Moon changing from ascending to descending. This is the time to take cuttings of Spring Flowering shrubs. Divide Spring Bulbs and replant to further locations if the foliage has yellowed (if not leave them be until next Flower Day on a descending Moon. (For newcomers -Why you do this on a Descending Moon is because there is added energy in the stems and roots of plants and they will not mind being cut/lifted or moved) On the 6th No gardening recommended before 4.55am (Don't thin you would anyway!!)-This is due to change over of ascendency and descendancy -Everything too muddled to be effective.
7th June -Leaf Day Moon descending in Cancer Thin out Leaf Crops sown 1-4th May. Plant out bulbing Fennel and Celery.
8/9/10th June -(10th up to 12.03pm) On 8th No Gardening before 5.20am (Ok so I'm up at 5 but there is a limit!) Moon perigee (For Newcomers Moon at closest point to Earth in Cycle so weaker effect) Fruit Days. After the natural 'fall' of baby apples and pears Thin them out leaving a pair as opposed to three on a spur. They will be stronger. Take the centre one out of Apples and the side one out of pears. Pick off stray shoots of tomatoes/cucumbers/pumpkins and melons to encourage stronger and quicker growth of fruit. Harvest frist crop Peas and Mangetouts.
11/12/13th June - Root Days Moon descending in Virgo (Also known as Earth Days) Plant out Leeks sown 10th April, top and tailing roots and shoots first to encourage stronger growth. It is also wise to leave them out on top of soil to dry prior to planting to eliminate the lava of the 'rust moth' -Sorry don't know UK name (Teigne in French -Help Obelxx!)
Alternate Leek rows with Carrots as smell deters Carrot Fly. Thin out Beetroot sown 24-25th May and Plant out Celeriac sown 12-14 March (I just can't get these roots bigger than a small potato -Any ideas how to succeed?)
14/15th June - Moon Descending in Libra so Flower Days (Also known as Air Days) Prick out Broccoli and Cauliflowers sown 26/27th May, making sure to bury the lower leaves to ensure a solid planting against future windrock.
16/17th June - Full Moon 9.30am on 16th until 4.27pm on 18th. Leaf Days - Thin out Salad crops. Carry out Topiary and Prune evergreen hedges including Box. Prick out Cabbages sown 29/31st May.
18/19th June - Fruit Days. Moon in Sagitarius and now on cusp of Moon Descending and Ascending so no gardening recommended before 7.55am on 19th (Noued Descending)
Sow Haricot Beans and Nasturtiums together (The latter to attract blackfly away from beans as they grow) Sow Sweetcorn in pockets of 3. Harvest Raspberries and Strawberries.
So there we go -So much to do, and let's face it we all love it.
