  • My experiment to grow a few plants of kale in large pots in the greenhouse has really paid off. They are all growing, albeit, slowly. I thought they might need watering but my greenhouse has an earth floor covered with weed matting and the plants have been able to draw up what moisture they need. I have one Niro de Rosso and one dwarf kale which I am picking from plus a few plants to pot on.
  • Huh, I  know I said I have my share of disasters but I  wasn't prepared for this.

All my butternut squash which were fully and carefully hardened off, stored in a dry, insulated shed.  I guess they froze .

The only useful job I managed today was to assemble a deep bed frame that I  want to move rhe strawberries to

  • So disappointing when you think you have done everything necessary to look after produce.
    Better luck next year.

Just had an email from the committee, on first inspection 40 sheds have been broken into there may be more, I haven't been to check mine yet but as it isn't locked and contains nothing worth pinching I think it will be ok. The site is fenced and there are cameras but if someone feels like getting in then it is hard to stop them.

    Dear G isn't anything safe!
That isn't the first times is it @barry island , or am I thinking of someone else.🤔
  • Sadly most sites seem to suffer this from time to time.  Last time on our site nothing was taken we think they were looking for machines and petrol.

I never store any produce in allotment shed , always bring it home and keep in garage , in-fact I also store stuff eg blood fish & bone in plastic boxes

Went to allotment yesterday and managed to get a load of pruning’s burnt plus a few other bits burnt as well
Dug up some carrots 🥕, beetroot & parsnips
Unfortunately a lot of leeks had gone to mush but not all

@purplerallim Yes a couple of years ago it was a regular thing in fact they even caught someone who had come 50 or 60 miles to rob our site, we also had a spate of arson too but things have been much more secure since the council fixed all of the fencing and the committee installed cameras. With the cost of living crisis I'm half expecting crops as well as valuables to come under threat next year.

Sadly I  have heard of cases of this already in the last couple of years.

Visited the plot this morning to take kitchen waste and check that all is well, shed was just as dilapidated as always but nothing amiss regarding break-ins, it seems that the big freeze the other week didn't have any serious effect on the worm composter as I usually pack it with cardboard but had forgotten to do it, covered a patch of rhubarb with a large plant pot to force the stems I rarely eat any rhubarb apart from the forced ones. Strange but when checking the rhubarb there were some potato chips (chip shop chips) in with all the dead leaves maybe a bird dropped them or a rat, I also noticed a rat hole behind the shed not sure what to do about that so will leave it for now.
