  • For the anoraks on here, there is also a White Prince Charles, and a red form, raised by Mike Brown from seed of Prince Charles, called Charlie Brown.

The seed of Prince Charles made me snort...need to grow up ;)

There was a great thread a good while ago about plants that we couldn't bring ourselves to buy because if the name. I believe a rose called Cliff Richards featured quite strongly. The geums had some pretty awful names too. Isn't there one called baked bean or something?

Fuschias also have terrible names...have a Diva Mariah and a Dollar Princess in my garden. Have a little giggle when I mention them, makes you wonder who are the fools that name them.

I was amazed that Nick could do a whole piece on group 3 clems and not mention "viticella" or did I miss that when Possum said something?  I've always thought Blue Angel/Bleitny Anioll was a better clem than Prince Charles.  Very similar but there's a lovely bar on the reverse of the tepals and it took everything a Belgian winter and summer could throw at it - temps from -32C to +38C despite being on the shady north side.   Princess Diana too tho she was in full sun on the south side.

Thanks very much for that, much appreciated.
  • Yes, @Richard Hodson great to have you back. That Helianthus that you generously shared with me last autumn is doing really great - beautiful tall flowers, nice and healthy indeed. Can’t wait for it to bulk up a little more so I can start dividing it and propagate to have it also in other spots in the garden.
Also since people were mentioning clematis Princess Kate, I was wondering if it is a kind of plant that I could dig out and move to a different spot. It is growing nicely, but the current spot is a bit too crowded for her so I hardly get to see the flowers. If anybody has any advice on that, can you please let me know.

I went to bed trying to identify spots in the garden for more clematis ... where can I put Prince Charles?
    Next to Princess Diana???

Clematis Prince Charles did look lovely and my local garden centre seems to have it in stock but would it really thrive in shade? Guess it's worth a short.
