    I doubt an Aster, I agree, they do look like Astilbe. Let them grow on, they usually flower by June. They prefer a damper soil with some shade.
  • Thanks Borderline. The person who suggested plant was an Asta said it would have white or pink feathery flowers (he didn't mean Aster, as in Michaelmas Daisy.) It has been in a bucket in the shade and has grown well, which would go along with your advice about a shady spot. I will move it to the front of the house (north facing) as back garden gets very hot.

    Looks like an astilbe to me. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
