We have two, inherited and well established wisteria. They are far too big to g round counting buds on every stem so now I just cut back stems which are going the wrong way and cut as far back as I can reach while they're in leaf.
They produce new, long, whippy stems from when the first flush of flowers finishes and are still at it. In winter, when we can see the structure more clearly, we remove any stems heading under gutters or exploring the roof tiles.
