Chomper

The evening vine weevil hunts have resumed, and so far no sign on the grown ups, and larvae only in 1 pot (only a couple seen too). However, assorted plant leaves are showing signs of being chomped. I’ve seen a few of these caterpillars which I’m currently blaming, can anyone ID it please?

  • This pic is of my grape vine, now stripped of any leaves 🤬

My grapevine hasn’t got any leaves this year yet ... can we have a photo of the whole vine please.

  • We’re a few weeks ahead here it seems this year (South Manchester). Each bud on the main vine has been chomped - and now ‘bleeding’ sap :( I’ll endeavour to get a photo later.

Any my thoughts on what the critter is?

Hard to tell without a clear pic of its head, but I think it's an elephant hawk moth caterpillar.

Certainly some similarities but without better pics and a sense of scale there’s also several others it could be.  I’m also puzzled at it being at this stage in its lifecycle in April ...

  • This one was a thick as an average little finger. Will try and get better pics tonight!

We need to see it’s face 😊

Is that it on your grapevine?  Cos that’s not a grapevine 😉

the leafy pic pic isn’t the grapevine, the others are though :)

Attempted caterpillar head shots last nighy, as this younger looking one popped up on a hydrangea... hoping it helps with an id!
