    @MrsDeeGarden
    I put a reply on the rose thread, but I think Climbing Iceberg would be nice, but it depends what colour you think is best for your purposes... I like white roses.. and it's virtually thornless...

  • Thank you so very much @Marlorena . I do love white as a colour (my fav colour in fact) so the prospect of a white rose sounds fun to me. I'll look into it.

    Thank you once again!

    I have a climbing iceberg which was cut down to very short sticks when next door replaced  their fence. It came straight back the next year. It seems to be pretty disease resistant and doesn't mind a little bit of shade. The only downside is that it has no scent - or none that I can detect anyway.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Thank you @B3 This is very useful information as I was wondering about it's resistance to disease. DA's website describes it as a rose with light fragrance but I suppose I could live without the scent since I will be pairing it with the Arthur Bell which I have been told has a strong scent.

    Looks like it's off to the garden center to see if I can lay my hands on this Iceberg then.
    So excited! Thank you once again!

    @MrsDeeGarden    just to say, if you do decide on that rose, and I don't want to sound as though I'm stating the obvious but I know you're new to roses, but make sure you get the 'Climbing' version, as there is a beautiful floribunda called 'Iceberg' that only grows to 3 foot.. you do want the climber … but of course you may see something else you prefer... so have a good look around... there are so many to choose from and it's a personal decision really.

  • Thank you @Marlorena for clarifying that and it's not stating the obvious at all. Better to hear it more than once if it will save a future headache.

    I did see in one of your photos (on an old thread) where you had a Zephirine Drouhin with a yellow rose. What is the yellow rose and how has that combination being for you? It looks amazing to me. I love pink you see, especially soft toned ones.

    @MrsDeeGarden   .. oh I'm delighted you mentioned that yellow rose... it's 'Lady Hillingdon'.. and with roses I also like pink with yellow..

    I'm glad you like it too !... just to say though, that this famous rose flowers from mid May to mid June, then you get bits and bobs until Autumn... I decided not to keep it as I wanted something with more flower power later in the year..
    ..but it is a very beautiful rose, and the spring foliage is all dark mahogany or plum purple in colour..  it took about 4 years or so to get 6 foot tall by 10 foot wide along a fence..  it's difficult to train for fences, and is best grown way up a house wall... personally I would not recommend it for your fence..

  • Oh this photo again tantalising my eyes. The Hesperis and the foxgloves make it even better. Thank you for that detailed explanation.

    I am going to bother you a little bit more please if you don't ming.....If I wanted a pink rose for my Arthur Bell (instead of white, just to have options), which would you recommend? Bearing in mine I also have Clematis president and multi-blue?

    Thank you as always!

    @MrsDeeGarden  any one of these would do, all great roses in their own way.. choose from 'Aloha'.. 'Strawberry Hill' [thorny]... 'A Shropshire Lad' [thornless]...  'James Galway'..  best of luck with your choices !
