Fire I don’t know the name there was a large pond there previously and I think it’s a water plant grows about 3-4 foot high. Mid green wide blades with sharp edges. Very very vigorous has brownish seed heads . If I ever find out the name I will let you know
I can set a clock with my visiting hogs - I put the food bowl out at 8, the first comes at 8.30 and by 11.30 just before I go to bed I get the (sometimes empty) bowl in. We are lucky to have French doors (all glass) so can see the hogs whilst they eat the food/fight/make noises etc.
That is late purplerallim, do they visit other gardens before coming to yours? I think my hogs only eat here and perhaps at our neighbours too. Sometimes one will come at 6.30 p.m. when it is still daylight - pass the doors and into our field before returning around 8.30 - 9 p.m.
not sure what to make of this post. It seems to be a post asking for help that has diverted into a hedgehog lovers meeting.
So we are talking about a loch ness monster that comes out at 2am, makes a bit of rustling noises and has never been seen.
The culprits are
a) cats b) rats and lastly c) hedgehogs. well possibly nessie or a yeti of course too.
You very very rarely hear hedgehogs.
So the garden sounds like it could do with clearing up but I find it cheeky for the landlord to expect you to clear an invasive pond species that was clearly there before you moved in. I would argue that that has nothing to do with you just like an overgrowth tree would not be your responsibility to remove.
Maybe someone can advise you on where to get help with tenant responability but I am sure this is not yours. Cut it down with a strimmer. Hedgehogs will be sleeping under leaves and twigs so its very unlikely to hurt them with a strimmer and they will definetely be in a corner somewhere. so clear the area with a strimmer and let the landlord deal with it when they regrow in 2 months.
The garden is now cleared all the grass dug up and landlords are happy, and no hedgehogs 🦔 harmed! I have set up a feeding station which is being used hopefully by hogs. Lovely to read others stories about their little spiky visitors. Thanks to all who advised and I now have a lovely garden I am happy to entertain in and grow plants so it was worth all the hard work!
I do wonder if mine is the end feeding station @Guernsey Donkey2 , as it tends to get later as the season progresses. Last night didn't think they would come as it was very wet, meaning lots of wild food coming out, but this morning an empty plate, and yes hogs not others as little poops left. I am finding poops in areas of the garden I didn't think they visited, so lots of activity in my garden.
