When I first moved here, I was concerned about the NNE aspect of my patio, but now I'm glad of it. It's wonderful to be able to sit in the shade on a hot day (remember them?)
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Loads of brilliant ideas,, yes plants behind the chairs, our garden faces NE also, but because of the size, the fact its a bungalow, and not overlooked there is always a bit of sun, even in the shadiest bits.  Personally, I would put the chairs at an angle so it doesnt look like the Drs waiting room, heucheras love shade,(I have got masses) A Rodgersia, in a very big pot we recently finnished planting up a whole shady border, its also under a eucaliptus) Zephrine Dreuine will grow there, we also have dog roses, you could grow in big pots.  Yes, have some BIG pots bettr thatn lots of small ones,  My house plants are there now, spider plants and begonias.  When my daughter comes up will get her to do a pic.

I do remember the hot days and I’m happy we don’t have a repeat of that, @B3. Thank you, @Nanny Beach, lots of good ideas.
