I have a NNE patio and I love the aspect because you can shelter from the sun. Your can grow most things in containers apart from flowers that only open in direct sunlight - which would be a bit of a waste of effort!

You definitely need something frothy in a biggish pot on the left hand side with smaller pots around it and I would try some of the geraniums planted in the narrow strip of gravel in front. A fern or two in pots on the shelf under the table and something decorative on the table itself perhaps.

Something frothy sounds good, @Lizzie27, but what? Would astrantia grow well in a pot? I have a heuchera as well, which should be nice and frothy while in bloom. I will definitely have ferns.

I don't see why not, as long as you kept it well watered. Astilbe might also work. What colour is your heuchera?  If you could tie the two colours together, that would look better.

Heuchera is ‘Red Pearls’ - silvery leaves and reddish flowers. Astrantia is ‘Moulin Rouge’ and has red flowers as well.

That's a new one on me, sounds gorgeous and would go well with the astrantia. Look forward to another photo when it's finished.  I love a good project!

Added a footstool and some more pots. I was wondering if I could move the standard Harlow Carr rose in the corner... It might not get enough light though.

A nice little pot of something cheery on the table would perk it up. A little half pan of fibrous rooted begonias perhaps ? or busy lizzies. Both do well in shade.

Or for a totally off the wall suggestion you could stencil some ivy climbing up the backs of the chairs!

Thank you, @hogweed. I did have some violets in a shallow terracotta bowl on the table, but they had to go. I was thinking to replace them with streptocarpus for the summer, but I don’t know how well they do outside. There is a begonia ‘Glowing Embers’ on the wall and it’s now starting to flower.

I like the idea with the stencil as well.
