  If you've got soil and room near your pergola, you could try hops. Grows very fast apparently, but dies down in winter. I think the leaves are a bit 'scratchy' though.

  Yes I thought of hops. I saw them in Rome once and they looked great. They still seemed to let a lot of light through too
