Fast growing trailing plant for privacy

mattsdanmattsdan Posts: 4
Hi everyone
Has anyone got any tips on fast growing evergreen trailing plants?  Recently moved into a new house and realised the neighbors can see Into our decking area. We would like to hang some plants from the pergola for some privacy which will grow fast enough to work this summer.
Many thanks

When you say hang, do you mean hanging baskets?
Or maybe you mean climbers, they're what's usually grown up a pergola.

    Hi Kitty
yes I am thinking of hanging some containers from the top of the pergola. We will also plant some climbers however these will probably take a summer or two to provide the screening we need.
    thanks

my first instinct is the watering of these plants is going to be a problem.

What's the aspect of your pergola Dan? Is it in full sun, shade?
What style are you after? All foliage plants or something flowering?
Hosta is right about the watering, hanging baskets are high maintenance. A photo might be helpful.

Are your neighbours on the same level as you and what angle is their line of sight? Across, up or down?

Rather than hanging baskets, which may leave gaps in between, apart from them being a nightmare to keep watered, if your pergola is square/rectangular, with straight bars, you could hang some cheap venetian or roller blinds from the top  to block your neighbour’s view, gradually pulling them higher as your climbers grow. I have venetian blinds on my pergola, which are pulled right up in winter, but they could be taken down ans stored, as they are fixed to the bars with plastic zip ties, so easy enough to remove. If you need more light you can angle the slats or adjust up and down to suit. If the pergola is rounded at the top or a more complex shape, thats trickier...

Watering will be a nightmare if you hang baskets or troughs high up.  Better to prepare the ground at the feet and plant some well chosen climbers which will surprise you with their vigour - clematis, honeysuckle, rambling roses, grapevine?

Nollie's suggestion of temporary blinds is excellent.  You can buy rolls of bamboo and willow screening quite cheaply and roll them up or down as far as you need while the climbers establish.

    Bamboo screening can look nice.

They were cheap as chips from a diy store and do work a treat, Obelixx. Here’s a photo showing them at half mast with the slats open and the easy fixing with zip ties:

The blinds do look good. Think I’ll be ok watering as I’m used to hanging baskets. Thanks for all your suggestions
