Something white to go with Verbena Bonariensis Lollipop?

NollieNollie Posts: 7,529
I have a few VB lollipops and would like to pair them with something white in south-facing bed, but on the east side of the house, so gets mostly morning and a bit of midday sun, but can still get pretty hot. Soil is clay, but much improved with organic stuff and grit.

I was thinking of Achillea Ptarmiga Perry’s White, for a sort of airy cottage feel, perhaps behind the VBLs or a more upright form of gaura if such a thing exists (I have ‘whirling butterflies but thats quite floppy).

Any thoughts on either of these or alternative suggestions?

Cheers.

They look good with yellows and oranges.
VB come up all over my garden and last year they appeared alongside stipa gigantea and a combination of helianthium and heliposis - looked really good
The also appear amongst the Bishops Children dahlias (yellow through to red) I often grow

They do indeed, Pete but my east garden is strictly purple, pink and white, lacking a bit on the white side!

Achillea Ptarmica the pearl, gypsophila, white scabious, Salvia ‘Trebah’ (lilac white) or other salvias. Veronica spicata ‘Icicle’ might look very good.

Or a white form of eryngium?

Love the cosmos with VB Pete, although I don’t seem to have the right conditions at the right time to get flower seeds to grow (or I’m just crap at it) so perennial is better.

Wish I had thought of Eryngium earlier, rainsingirl! Having checked, my supplier has sold out of the white Miss Willmott. Could maybe get it elsewhere, but I’m tacking this on to a pending order with them to save on postage.

Pitter-patter, some nice suggestions, a veronica would be a good contrast in form and my supplier does have that lovely Salvia Trebah as well... if I do go for an A. ptarmiga I would go for the Perrys rather than the Pearl, I think, as the former is less invasive, allegedly. Quite tempted to add on a few of those salvias though.

    Lots of great options, thanks!

If it’s mainly morning sun into midday, Thalictrum Delavayi Album and Gillenia Trifoliata might be suitable.

What about Centaurea Montana Amethyst in Snow? I love how it connects purple and white.

Some more to look up, thanks. I should have said, although this bed is not exposed to full on scorching all day, like my south west bed, it still gets damned hot, so drought tolerance is important. 22deg by lunchtime last week!
