we've been there and it's lovely. The charity Perennial who run it, gave me some money when I was off work before/ after surgery. Bless'em

I am reassessing my view of conifers too but I agree that montys choice was unfortunate.
I grew thunbergia last year. I think it was the one they showed although I remember mine being a bit redder. I will definitely grow it again this year and maybe in the ground this time

Tidal Wave Red Velour last August. The 12” pot contains three plants.

At the end of the season it was cut back and overwintered in the cold frame. This is it 5 minutes ago

As others have said, it does not need dead heading. Like my cats but unlike my windows it cleans itself.

I think Monty’s choice, while not as interesting as it could have been, met his need for a pair of ‘spires’ while not being outrageously expensive and thus out of the reach of many of us.

There are lots lots of interesting ‘conifers’ but many of them look a bit boring as young plants ... Foggy Bottom today is a very different garden now compared with when it was a young garden.

It is understandable that enthusiastic gardeners want the more obscure plants but I bet Monty chose those conifers because they were accessible both in terms of price and availability. I agree with Dove here.

Commonplace plants are so for a reason - they’re easier to care for and more floriferous

I thought tidal wave was supposed to grow tall? That just looks like a large bedding plant.🤔

Going point dove and pic. I've never looked at the price of them, but it makes sense that as some of these plants take a long time to be big enough to sell, they would be expensive. I stand corrected😉

I only caught the last 15 minutes but thought the climbing annuals segment was fascinating.  Certainly worth looking at again.
