I was at Wisley recently. I've been after a Kojo-no-mai for a while and they had some in stock so I impulse bought one at £15 for a young plant. Then yesterday I popped in to my local Blue Diamond place. They had the same offer but tucked away in the corner they had some significantly more mature copies (three or four times the size) for £30. Having put quite a bit on the credit cards recently I had to resist buying a larger one!
£1.99, £4.99, £2.95 ... why the duplicity? These places are trying, and failing, to persuade us that things are cheaper then they actually are. Have people noticed that shops like John Lewis and M&S with arguably higher ethical standards have abandoned this underhand behaviour and priced things without a conning motive?
It's always been the same. I'm old enough to remember pre-decimal and items at £x/19/11d. It must work on some kind of pyschological level or it wouldn't have continued for so long.

The alternative is to not buy it, but I think you're right - people kid themselves that they've spent less than they actually have. If every shop's the same, it's irrelevant anyway as you still have to buy the product if you need it! BHS changed things many years ago by rounding products up to the nearest pound. It must have brought in a huge amount of extra revenue. I wonder what happened to all that extra money.....hmmm...let me guess... New yacht for that brazen thief perhaps?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I was told that it was so the staff had to open the till to get a penny change, which thus registered the transaction and so stopped a dishonest employee slipping the whole pound amount into their pocket. Mind you, they could always have kept a few pennies handy somewhere!
I shop at homebase a lot of the time. You have to go early or hope you strike lucky on a delivery day. Avoid going in summer and in hot weather because unless it's delivery day all the plants will be dead because they don't water often enough. Prices are great though
I usually have a look in The Range - like everywhere else it's best to go at the end of the week, and l can find some unusual things amongst the usual suspects. Earlier this week l bought 2 double hellebores for what would have the price of one at the Garden Centre.
I was buying an arch, and the woman in front of me was buying two Hellebores reduced from £12.99 to £10.99 and lots of pansies. She turned to me and said my arch was nice. It cost a lot less than her GC haul, and will last a lot longer. I didn't dare engage with her about sowing Hellibore seeds or even buying plug Hellibores.

People who want to empty their purse will do so.
