Snake's head fritillary

  • I planted a couple of dozen fritillaries last year and they are mainly flowering now. Very innocuous at first, just little thin spikes poking out, I did wonder what they were! The bulbs planted around the pond in our boggy area were up first and are flowering the strongest. Lovely plants.

    Don't know where ours came from, we only stopped mowing that area of the garden about 5 years ago and they just appeared the following year, which was very pleasing, stopped mowing until about the end of July, we are awaiting wild Orchids, they just appeared as well a few years ago.
