folded down reasonably ok @B3 but difficult to open now. It was only a cheap one from Aldi, just to see if I would really use it and if it was easier on my right shoulder, but I'm surprised I'm so dependent on it now! Might give the help line a call in the morning to see what they advise. Thanks for your input anyway.

I can recommend "Lend with Care" for anyone wanting to support 3rd world businesses, farmers etc, directly.  You can see details of who wants how much loan, and what it's for - eg small farmers in the Philippines wanting a loan for seeds - and loan £15.  Your loan is repaid over a set period (no interest is paid), and you can withdraw your money or re-invest it with another business.  You pay a small amount in addition to the £15 (I think it's £1.50) for administration, which seems fair.

I donate three times a year.  Children in Need, Red Nose Day and the Salvation Army at Christmas.  They have all been told not to contact me and apart from a thank you letter from the Salvation Army they abide by my wishes.  I used to be a Corporate Fundraiser for a charity, despite that I can't stand chuggers or the constant barage of TV adverts.  My friend has had real trouble with her brother (who has mental problems) sending loads of money in response to TV adverts because he feels sorry for the children.

@Liriodendron I think there is a similar charity which only supports women. Can't think what it's called now.

Trust has been broken.  I trusted the major  charities to spend my money honestly but I don't now. How can an ordinary person tell a small charity from a scam?
I consider that a charity becomes a scam when they spend more than 20% on admin and I think that's a rather generous percentage.

@hogweed - you can choose to support women on "Lend with Care", if you wish.  Or people from a particular part of the world.

I hate having to pay people to work on my car. Mechanics aren't cheap these days but the ones I seem to end up with aren't especially competent to justify the price. I had new springs fitted on Thursday and took the wheel off today to find the manufacturer's label still cable tied to the spring. It's a big plastic tag about 2" x 3" with a good 6" loose end on the tie. At £120 plus vat for a spring I'd rather they didn't get damaged. They also tightened the wheel nuts so hard my 2' breaker bar only just shifted them. Nuts have torque settings for a reason. :|

Ornothologists are a childish bunch. I like reading the rare bird alert maps now and then and seeing the wierd and wonderful bird names, lesser yellowlegs, Richard's cackling goose, coues arctic redpoll, stuff like that but I wonder who came up with the name for the penduline tit? Named after its dangling nest apparently...

     :o

Today's gripe is with my cat, who lovingly stamped over my keyboard last night and changed a lot of settings somehow.  I can get on here, and find my emails, but not access the internet generally, or, apparently, close everything down in such a way that I can open it up again.  Fortunately we're visiting our son next Saturday.  He'll just laugh and press a few keys, and everything will be back to normal...   ;)
