Well if it had persisted down after you'd cut the grass, it would have stimulated growth. Your grass would have grown more vigorously and you would have needed to cut it again sooner.
Don't worry, AnniD - I can restore appropriate levels of curmudgeonness... our terrace has just had our gas cut off. It's been a couple of years since the guy in the end house reported a suspected gas leak, but the gas men couldn't find anything. We have an above-ground gas main, not unknown in this area. They have now identified 6 leaks in the gas main, and disconnected it for an unspecified period. A team is coming tomorrow to decide what to do. We have a combi gas boiler, so will have to boil kettles for washing etc for the foreseeable...
