Hi Lyn. Won't bother with niger seed again. No matter what I tried I wouldn't win so will save some money there as sunflower hearts are cheaper. Thanks for advice on cheese.
Hi purplerallim. I do have a couple of wood pigeons who visit from time to time but they would have to spend an afternoon there in order to clear them. Once I have cleared them up I shouldn't have any more problems hopefully.
  • Apart from Robin mix,i don't buy seed as such.I just fill up the hanging feeders with Sunflower hearts, a suet block on the table, and mealworms scattered everywhere, with suet pellets the same. The groundfeeders love it! It was fascinating watching the blackbirds thismorning, scratching through the snow to get to their bits! I usually put it on a round slab, and they soon cleared it,leaving deep snow all around!

  • No @Fran IOM the woodpideons are eating them out of the feeder not the ground, that's why I'm amazed they get into the tiny holes in the feeders.😀

I noticed the other day that the sunflower seeds come from Bulgaria.
We might all have starving birds if the B*****t thing goes t*ts up!
The seeds will all be stuck in the endless truck queue.

@purplerallim !!  Never thought of them eating out of the feeders! Can't see them getting on to mine and couldn't imagine how they would get the seeds out as you say. Cos you said there was no mess underneath I assumed they were clearing up for you.  :/
  • Well my feeders are on a bird stand @Fran IOM , the woodpideons stand on the lower ones and eat from the above feeders. This is after I swapped them from the lower ones as they were standing above them and bending down to eat out of them. There are feeders in the way but they just duck under them. Am at a loss to know how to stop the greedy birds clearing the feeders short of pigeon spikes( the kind they use on buildings)🤯😖🙄

Oh flippin ‘eck ... better stock up then ... I also use them in our homemade bread ... better stock up on cooking ones too ... and probably pumpkin seeds as well ... don’t have enough of our own to last the year round. 🙄

I've tried growing sunflowers and seed crops for the birds but we don't seem to have the climate to ripen them. The sunflower heads were going mouldy before they could dry out properly. I was really interested to see radish being grown for the seeds as a wild bird crop on Winterwatch though. I've got quite a lot of old radish seed that I might try for that this year.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

@purplerallim Noticed from the window this morning that two seagulls appeared to be having a feast under the bird feeders so I am hoping they were enjoying the "mess" and pleased to see they were drinking the water supplied. At least they don't frighten the small birds off as they were on the feeders.
    Pigeon spikes  :#

Pigeons are a PITA, they sit on the roofs round about and wait for the food to go out. They then Hoover it up like a panicking crowd in a supermarket after snow is forecast. I wait by the back door and shoo them off when l can, but it's difficult. Neighbour next door likes pigeons but can't stand magpies, for me it's the other way round. If only we could train them to use each other's gardens ! Blackbird has learnt to come to the back door for food - the pigeons won't come that close. :)
