Ivy

Hi I'm new to this, and I'm in the middle of pulling down ivy from what I would call a slated wall. How do you get the big pieces out. Thank you sam

    If you're not in a rush, cut it at ground level, once it's dead it's much easier to remove

    Just as you would eat an elephant, one bite at a time. As suggested cut at ground level first to kill it off. Take off all the easy stuff then have a good look at what's left. A crowbar can be useful for prising rooted stems off the wall.

    You beat me to it @Hostafan1.😀 Cut at ground level wait a week and then pull off, much easier. You will also know if any is coming from nextdoor that way too.

    One of those scrapers for stripping wallpaper works well.

    The ivy looks lovely BUT if its stems are growing between the concrete panels and forcing them apart the wall won’t remain standing for long and then the poster will have a
    very expensive mess to clear up. ... been there, done that  :'(

    Thank you everyone, and yes the wall is ugly I agree, I will be painting it and eventually some pretty climbers . Just moved in and ivy was very close to house so it did have to go. What climbers would people suggest? Thanks Sam

    It'll depend on your soil conditions, aspect and climate etc Sam, but clematis are wonderful climbers and there are loads to choose from. That bed isn't very deep [front to back ] so that might rule out sometypes,  but  there are still plenty which would suit.
     
    Whatever type of plant you like, whatever colour, there will be a climber to suit, whether it's roses, jasmine or anything else. I'd rule out honeysuckle, as it works best when it scrambles over something like a shed, garage, pergola or other structure.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
