Who has a sneaky squirrel in their garden?

I think I may have worked out what's going on in my garden.
I kept noticing random bits of half eaten food sitting all along the flat bit that caps top of a high fence- apples, sunflower heads etc.
The squirrels store them up there where the foxes can't reach them
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • The grey squirrel in my garden had decided to move into my roof space. We filmed it climbing up the pebbledash with leaves in its mouth, building a nice nest to spend the winter in. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xl6jmt3-LGE. I have since caught it, and it’s partner, using traps with peanut butter. I was sorry to have killed these appealing creatures, but I have been in my attic crawl space, and seen the start of the damage they are capable of, with rafters already marked by gnawing, very close to the electric lighting wires. If you have squirrels in your garden, ask yourself where they are spending the winter.

Do the birds not pinch them, B3? The magpies and crows etc round here would have them in a minute  :D

JohnnyC - they do indeed create a horrfiic amount of damage if they get inside your house  :/

I suppose they do but I've only noticed squirrels  eating them. I don't encourage them but I don't interfere either.

Not something I've ever seen,  B3. Fascinating how creatures operate isn't it?  :)

  • The mention of magpies by Fairygirl reminded me of a funny incident in my garden a couple of years ago. The squirrel had found some monkey nuts we'd strung out for the blue tits. He managed to pull them off the string and ran through the garden with each one he secured and buried it. He was totally oblivious to a magpie which had watched every move, and as the squirrel returned for another nut the crafty bird dug up each peanut as soon as the squirrel's back was turned. I wish I could have filmed it.

At our old house, one of the most common weeds was peanuts planted by the squirrels.
