Bleak day all day here chilly, lowering skies and interminable rain; so I decided to decorate the Christmas tree.  It helped to brighten the mood a tad but the thought of this year's Christmas still doesn't excite me very much.  Trying to make sure that so many months of difficult self-discipline have not been in vain, we decided not to have even members of our family here or visit anyone.  We hope we can make up for it at Easter.
Yesterday, after seeing the posts about kefir making, we decided to have a go too.  Didn't heat the milk; but, it's still not creamy enough....  I read it can take even 36 hours when started with cold milk, so hopefully we shall have some for breakfast tomorrow! Something to cheer us up and make us feel good and virtuous!

The future seems rather hopeful, Zoe.

    Yes, thank you, Phaidra!
Yesterday morning, I took 3 jars and filled them with 500 millilitres of milk.  In the first I used milk straight out of the fridge.  In the second, the milk had been left out of the fridge overnight.  For the third, I warmed the milk to 20C.  In each jar I added 25ml of shop kefir.  I stirred the starters in thoroughly, using a chop stick. (I'd read on google that metal spoons should not be used??) I left them all on the dining table.
Much to my delight, this morning 2 of the jars contained very tasty kefir; the one with the fridge milk, is still thinking about it!  Not at all surprizing, of course.
Interestingly, there's a slight but noticeable difference both in texture and flavour between the already set kefirs.  I think the room-temperature batch is VERY slightly more pleasant.
A lot easier than making yogurt; I would agree.

    ....

We too are not seeing family or friends.  We do not feel safe.  Hopefully it will be possible before too long.
