I think it was a recording of some sort, playing on a loop. My neighbours down there do favour plastic animals (sometimes knocked over by real foxes and badgers).Could it possibly be the case that real birdsong is being replaced by a virtual one? Am I losing the plot?

no, I think your neighbours have lost the plot :)
Posy you are not losing it.
Horrendously (each to their own but) yes there are resin ones, if that is the kind of thing your neighbours favour.
Had a little search and they come up on fleabay etc. Garden tweeting bird, motion sensor.
You can even get packs of four.....
Edit. Apologies I missed that you don't mind it.

Christmas sorted? There's so much I don't know! Thank you FG.

I must try and get a pic of that garden next time I'm up that way. It's not big, and the whole garden is full of them. I assume there must be a reason, but I'm damned if I can think of one!  ;)
Plastic ones don't poop everywhere? :D

Packs of four? What are we waiting for? It's not as bad as hip hop or garage and quieter than wind chimes. It could be a lot worse!

There's a whole world out there, Philippa, that I have never even dreamed of. There must be good reasons for having plastic animals instead of real ones, but I can't immediately think what they are. Same for bird recordings. Where I live there are real, mobile and often quite noisy examples of all these things and I have decided to continue to enjoy them this way. But if anyone out there has any, please do tell us what it's all about.

I have noticed / heard some Blue Tits and Sparrows in my garden here in Bristol over the last few weeks

I thought they got Easyjet off to warmer climes
Everyone is just trying to be Happy.....So lets help Them.
  • That's what I kept telling them, but they preferred the exotic fare my side of the fence!

There is an alpaca farm near us that that a life sized  fibre glass Zebra in the field. That is a little little disconcerting as you drive past.
