Paul N - The fact is we're allowed to have opinions and to express them as long as we follow rules about courtesy etc.   A bit naive to expect that your original post would incite only agreement and the fact that you say here that it would be good to have some re-runs of GW with Geoff H at the helm makes me wonder about how often you suspend your critical faculties since your last post says you like GW in all its forms.

Really?   Have you been watching all those years and learned so little you can't spot a  Monty boo-boo or deplore the fall in production and/or presentation standards.  You wouldn't expect Delia or Mary Berry to show us a cake recipe that doesn't work so why is Monty allowed to show us stuff someone here knows won't work?

Obelixx, did you get out of bed the wrong side?  I think it's really heartening to read enthusiastic, appreciative comments about Gardeners World.

Yes, sometimes I disagree with Monty's methods or advice, but gardening isn't an exact science... and he's rarely absolutely wrong.  He's an enthusiastic amateur, not a trained professional.  I find GW entertaining, inspirational, occasionally controversial - but for me there's always something worth watching.

Disagreement is fine, but suggesting the OP is naive, suspending his critical faculties and lacking judgement, is maybe not following rules of courtesy?

And you should hear my SIL's mother ... a remarkable cook, on the subject of Delia's many errors ... (they are neighbours) and have eaten each other's food.

The accuracy of Delia's recipes is the result of many hours of work by her employees.

I know that but by the time it gets on screen it's been tested and proved to work and can be relied upon by amateurs.  The same cannot be said for some of Monty's efforts.

I have said elsewhere on this forum and even on this thread that I do enjoy a lot of GW and MD is certainly articulate so a pleasure to listen to but that doesn't alter the fact that he gets it wrong sometimes and that there appears to be less research by the production team about what can and should be covered as the seasons progress.

My issue in the last post was with the OP thinking his thread would only bring out sweetness and light and not liking criticism of the show in its current format.

Oh dear Obelixx, you have perfectly illustrated my point. Free speech isn't a licence for depressingly overcritical views. Lets cheer up. Its going to be a long Winter at this rate.

Delia's assistants aren't part of the tv production team ... she has her own business ... a completely different style of set up.

I enjoy Monty and the dogs and I get all comfy when I hear the words "Welcome to Gardeners World". Since it moved to the one hour slot, I do fast forward here and there. It must be hard to be appealing to all gardeners all the time.

I know some say he gets it wrong at times, but what does he get wrong?  I don't follow him blindly but nothing has stuck out to me as being a huge faux pas.

At the risk of being called negative,he said recently that his fennel was " 10 or 12 feet tall" I've never known it more than 8 feet, and we didn't get to see his.
He also said recently that liatris " gets to 5 or 6 feet tall" it's about half that.
If you'd watched that and gone and bought some liatris to go at the back of a border and waited for it to get to 6feet tall, you'd , rightly , be angry.

Perhaps his plants get taller ‘cos of the high hedges around them ... just a thought  ;)
