Heuchera tree

Hi, I bought some heuchera plants online.  When they arrived they didn't look like I expected, more like palm trees.  Anyone know what's wrong with them and how to correct it?
Thanks

  • Hi melanieannebaker,..i don't see any picture,..presuming you were sent Heuchera plants and not something else by mistake,..its possible that most of the leaves were removed before postage,..Heuchera plants pick up fairly quick and before you have to wait very long new leaves should appear,..do the leaves appear like the Heuchera plants below?

    Hi Philip
Thanks for your reply, I've edited my post, hopefully the photo is there now?
The leaf shape and feel seems to be that of a heuchera.  It just has a really funny trunk.
  • Could it be possibly simply that the bottom leaves have been cut away for transport as you say?

They often push themselves up out the ground, and need replanting.
I take it they were in pots?   Just plant them a bit deeper.

  • Hi fairygirl
    Thanks for your reply 😁
Yes they were in pots, the soil was level with the pot and then the stalk sticking up way higher than both.  If I plant it deep, it wont rot will it?  Should i plant it so deep that just the top leafy bit is above  ground, or still leave some stalk showing?

This is quite normal. Heucheras tend to push themselves out of the ground, as noted by @Fairygirl. You may plant your specimens to bury about half the stalk and it shouldn't rot. In my experience some cultivars are more prone than others to this "pushing up" behaviour. Their worst enemy is the infamous vine weevil. See https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/how-to-grow/Getting-rid-of-vine-weevils-on-heucheras/
  • Don't  panic it's a heucheura  thing. Every second year  or so you'll find they push up from the ground. Dig them up chop into bits and replant and Heigh Presto lots more heucheras. Apart from occasional vine weevil attack if they're in pots they are as tough as old boots. Slugs and snails  won't touch them. I love them x
  • Thanks so much, I shall plant in confidence now - when the weather is less wild! 😁

They're very forgiving plants Mduck, so don't worry about them.  The weevils are more of an issue when they're in pots, but they don't seem to be affected much if in the ground.
I wasn't sure if you were planting in the ground or into other pots, but in any case, shove 'em in and let them crack on  :)

Frankly I would have rejected any heucheras that arrived looking like that. It tells me that they are oldish plants, not in good condition. If you got them off E.... cheapish well ok, but if from a nursery or GC, send them back.
