    I can see Mars in the SSE soon after dark

    I can identify the obvious to a rank amateur constellations so I'll see if I can spot one tonight. It might give me a clue. 
    If I remember rightly, the plough was to the left but higher as I faced north.
    I like your map @Alan Clark2 in Liverpool. Is the violet line the horizon at the time?

  • The line passing through the Sun and Regulus is the ecliptic, the path of the Sun round the sky over the year. The horizon is the circular edge of the map.

    Could be Mars, enjoy it, it will be gone soon and we probably won’t ever see it this bright again. 
    I’ll have a look at 9pm tonight.

    It's there again, I think I can see Cassiopeia so it's probably Capella  :/ maybe :/

    We actually have a clear night, so Cassiopeia it is.
    You  can see Mars directly West at this time.  Still looking red.

  • Mars is actually in the South, very low down.
