I think the key with pyracantha is not to rush when pruning or renovating. Try to do it when you have time to consider what you are doing and clear up as you go. I tripped and fell backwards into ours last year, it was a rather painful experience, I am sort of grateful it was backwards and not face first. I really like them but wish they came in non spiney varieties too.
