Need donations for community gardening

  • Is there a Waitrose anywhere in your area?  They give money to local causes.   :)

Unfortunately no.  It's a very poor ward and Waitrose wouldn't do well.

I'd contact any local garden centres. They may either give you or let you have some things at cost price (compost, plants, bulbs etc) in return for a bit of advertising.

Our council plants up the roundabouts and verges at major junctions. They quite often have a 'Sponsored By ....' sign displayed. If any of the sites you are planning are near local businesses maybe the businesses would sponsor a bed each. It could be quite cheap advertising for them if you can get the plants at cost price and keep the beds small.
We are on to that one as well.   Approached a few businesses but it's not a massive area with loads of through-traffic so most aren't interested.

The area is like a small village that's been absorbed by a huge city.  If you know what I mean.

  • Several community groups often do plant or seed swop events. Don't  know if you have the "Edible" network  near you or Transition  Towns etc. You didn't  mention  your location.  Agree Freecycle  wanted post might work x

I don't know.  I haven't heard of either of those.  I shall do some googling, thank you.

Many local areas and communities now have a Facebook page where locals share info/announcements/appeals/ things for sale or to take away.   See if you area has one and then make an appeal for spare bulbs and plants.

Put up notices around the garden perimeter and in local shops with notice boards asking for donations.  You never know, you may get more helpers that way too.

Yep, done that.  Our community FB page is a pretty lively one.

  • Just did some more community gardening.  Put a tyre under a road name sign and filled it with winter pansies.   Hope it survives the schoolchildren on their way home!

  • Only just seen your post Laura so this idea might be a little late, for this year at least - if your local Council does any mass planting in nearby parks, etc. ask them if they would donate their excess plants/blubs to you. Our community gardening/litter-picking group asks, and get loads given! The Woodland Trust has given us tree saplings. We've employed most of the other good ideas on here too. You said you've no Waitrose (neither have we) but the local Asda and Tesco have given us (and other community groups) money from the funds they get by selling the 5p/10p plastic carriers and from the shoppers' tokens scheme - not sure of the proper name for this, but shoppers get a token at the till and use it to 'vote' for one of three local schemes by dropping it into their chosen slot on a display behind the tills. The 'winner' after a set time gets whatever funding is on offer and three more needy causes get a turn, and so on. Both our Asda and Tesco have an employee whose job it is to enhance the store's relationship with the local community so yours might have one too - speak to them if you can. Also, have you thought of entering one or more of your local gardens into the 'It's Your Neighbourhood' section of the annual 'Britain in Bloom' competition? It's well recognised, good fun, a bit nerve-wracking on judging day but certainly helped us get local people/businesses on board to beautify our town, especially when the local press gets involved. We've entered lots of our gardens, some of which are tiny spaces, and won prizes, not to mention kudos! Good luck!
