100 year old Monkey Puzzle Tree?

Hi, we live in a house built in 1880- and we believe the monkey puzzle tree to be a similar age- although we don’t know for certain! Im rather concerned about it- a lot of the branches are going brown. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it dying? It’s so huge I need some advice!! I will try and add a photo!

  • I suspect it's suffered from the drought ... as have many other evergreens ... is it just the lower branches that are dying or are there brown branches near the top?

It's perfectly normal for the lower branches to turn brown and drop, that's why they always have a bare trunk.

  • That was my thought @Hostafan1 ... although the drought may have caused it to lose more than usual this year, it's only if the branches higher up were suffering that I'd be really concerned  :)

  • Gardeners' Question Time on Radio 4 last weekend had a piece about monkey puzzles so you could try listening to that via the BBC website.  RHS Website also has information particularly regarding soil (moist, well-draining) and exposure (protect from cold, drying winds).

I'd hazard a guess that , given its age, it's ok with the soil and situation. ;)
