"mine is a religion of peace, if you don't convert, we'll kill you"
I think they've all used that line in some form.
Queen Elizabeth ( head of the CoE) had her half sister Mary Queen of Scots beheaded for being the "wrong" sort of christian.

I thought it was for threatening to usurp her throne. Religion is an excuse or a tribal marker, but rarely actually a reason for atrocities.

So nothing to do with Catholics refusing to be Protestants then? nothing at all?
What about the 30 year war?

Cousin Mary, apart from being a very stupid woman, was plotting to overthrow and presumably kill Elizabeth so fair dos for that time and a much better queen for England.  Elizabeth was tolerant of both Protestants and Catholics which was unusual in an age of extremism and the Inquisition which deemed torture to be good for saving your soul.

Religion in any form has always been about control whether it be witch doctors/vudu/Christianity/Islam/cult of personality.   It concentrates power and wealth and there will always be exploiters and exploited/followers who want someone or something else to take responsibility for their lives.

It's always about a power struggle at root. "We deserve more power because we are smarter/ prettier/ richer / holier / poorer / maler / older / younger / more traditional than you. "

The Thirty Year War was in Europe between protestants and Catholics.  Then we have the Crusades between Christianity and Islam.  Humans seem to think war is a normal way to sort out differences whether ideological, religious or land grabbing for more resources and riches.  Any excuse will do.
