What a waste...

I’ve been pricking out seedlings today and potting  them on but I hate throwing away the ones I can’t use due to lack of space. These are hollyhocks and I’ve potted up over 50 already . They were saved seed and I’ve obviously been too heavy handed but some seeds are so small it can’t be helped. I can’t bear to just empty the tray :s do others have this problem?

I think part of the problem is the quantity of seed you get in some packets. I remember looking at a packet of nicotiana sylvestris and it said " approx contents 2,000 seeds"
I'm well aware of the issues of packaging, processing and pricing, but surely they could sell a cheaper packet with ,say,100 seeds?
If anyone wants more than that, they can buy extra packets.

  • Completely with you!

I sowed some saved Sweet William seed earlier in the year. First time I'd done it, and I think every single one must have germinated. Gave a load away, planted a load out in the garden, planted a load in some big pots to fill gaps next year, and still felt sad to throw the rest away!

I've started sowing half packs of seeds, thinking I'll sow more the year after, although this is difficult with the smaller seeds, which ironically you get more of! I've currently got far too many verbascum seeds germinating, don't know what I'll do with them all...

It's a shame they can't sprinkle them onto sticky compostable strips so that you could cut off what you want.

Maybe you could create some prototypes and try selling them online.  Maybe a lucrative hobby that could turn into a business!

I use rice pots to sow seeds in, you can just put in a pinch.
Most of my seeds are 99p per packet, that will last a couple of years.
If you can’t bear to throw any away, just sow less.

Unfortunately, I'm totally disorganised and utterly lazy.
You go for it if you like. Although B3eseeds has a nice ring to it.

I thought Lyn meant pots made from Rice. Rice bran pots.... plant and they decompose. Maybe its an idea.
