Now you've sorted out your footwear, there'll be no stopping you!  Good luck with your course.

Thanks @Mary370. I've worn them a bit now and they're quite comfy. I do hope that @wild edges prediction of cold feet from the steel can be mitigated by extra socks...

Heat Holder brand socks are about the best I've tried for insulating against the cold.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Cheers - I've made a note! I'm hoping we'll be moving about enough to keep warm. I need to sort out my clothes as the weather cools - what I usually wear in the garden at home is really not suitable for travelling on the tube (more holes than cloth)!

I found thermal ski socks very good for winter gardening.  Very warm and comfy too as they seem to have extra padding underneath.

@JennyJ have you tried Asos? My niece has size two/three triangular feet with the world's highest instep (They are little stumps on the ends of her legs!!!!) and she found that they do small sizes in 'lady' styles and wide fittings.

JennyJ - my oldest daughter has size 2-ish feet, but she gets lots of shoes/boots online. She also has quite awkward feet - very broad at the toe, and narrow at the heel. She seems to get enough choice though, so it's worth a try.
She likes quite 'punky' looking stuff though, so no idea if more conventional 'ladies' footwear' is available.  ;)
Try the walking/climbing shops for good socks too LG.  :)

Crikey @plant pauper. The way you describe your nieces feet reminds me of those 100 year old Chinese women with bound feet 😨.
C'mon, we all know she's a lovely girl really 😁.
