What is wrong with my Bleeding Heart?

I bought 2 Bleeding hearts and planted them early summer. They seemed to settle really well and had lots of lush growth and flowers. A few weeks ago one of them (on the right in photo) started to get yellowing leaves and from then it just looks like it's dying and has really thinned out. The other one however is still OK although just starting to show signs of a few yellowing leaves. Is it just dying back or has it got some sort of disease....I thought they were fairly hardy?? Any advice appreciated.

  • They do die back at the end of the year, though this is a little early

Mine have almost gone, I’ve chopped them back now.

Mine have been chopped back since the end of June. Really short display this year - they didn’t start until late because of the cold spring and they finished really early because from the end of May we had no rain and temps well into the 30’s. They don’t really like it hot and dry.

  • They are nearly dead here too. They are returning all the energy produced this year back to the roots, so next year will be a bigger plant. It has been a hard year on all plants.

Deciduous does NOT mean dead, fortunately!

They had probably flowered by the time you bought them in June.........they will disappear into the ground for the Winter and grow again come Spring........nothing to worry about

If they've been very dry over summer, they'll have shut down earlier too. They really need reliably damp soil to do their best. They'll be fine next year.  :)

Mine didn't flower at all this year, but have grown massive. Fingers crossed for next year.

A good idea is to put a couple of marker sticks in where they are ; so easy to forget and dig them up or trample on early-Spring growth .
