Red flowered shrubs?

josusa47josusa47 Posts: 3,530
My rainbow border is gradually filling up with plants of one sort and another, but the red end, nearest the street, is a bit sparse.  I'd like two or three shrubs, 2-5 feet high, with red flowers that will go on flowering for a few weeks.  So not camellias which are over and done by summer.  And when I say red, I mean red, not reddish pink or reddish orange or reddish purple.  Recommendations please!

Salvia 'Red Velvet' is very red. Larger flowers too.

    A  repeat-flowering rose?
Callistemon if you have the right climate for it.
Photinia with red new foliage, maybe.

Fuchsia Megellanica are tough longterm shrubs. If you have a sheltered spot and drainage good, Grevillea Rosmarinifolia is also an option.

A shrub rose like Barkarole is properly red, not pink, crimson, vermilion or purple.

There are some very red plants like geum, penstemons, potentilla and things, but they are not shrubs. Might a very berryish shrub be good, for variation?
  • Weigela 'Bristol Ruby' is a good red, but maybe a little dark for you.
    Potentilla 'Red Ace'?

Monarda? There are some nice red escallonias, red penstemons, shrub roses?

Callas if the situation is right, for red foliage berberis is good, red hydrangea, photinia.

The only true reds I have are Salvia Greggi - three growing together to form a large shrub, Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff and rose RD Braithwaite. The latter doesn’t seem to be grown very much so I seem to be on my own there, which puzzles me as it’s very tough and the blooms remain strong red ‘til they drop. I am going to try Barkarole next, @Fire on your recommendation. Agastache Kudos Red is on my list, if I can ever track it down. I might also try Monarda Cambridge Scarlet or similar.

Ooh, so many ideas!  Thanks, everyone.  I'll make a list of these and spend the afternoon reading all about them.
