Yes, people don't tell you how much gardening hurts.

Oh Tom! Hope you're ok in a day or two  :)
As you're turfing, I'd be inclined to leave it a bit longer to settle, especially if there's rain in your forecast. It's surprising how big a difference it can make, and it would be a shame if your hard work was spoiled. Others may disagree of course  :)

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Yeah I disagree, just get it down asap, the base layer is firm so it's not going to affect the level. You'll end up having to weed what the rain doesn't wash away if you leave it!

Thank you all so much for your comments!
So in the end I had 5 cubic meters of top soil which I borrowed through and levelled. I left it for two days to tweak the level before turfing on Thursday. I think it looks pretty good! Trying to water it lots- couple of browner patches at the moment which I hope will recover will adequate watering.

So just over three weeks in and it looks lush! I was watering it lots- hose in the morning and a good half hour on each half in the evening with a sprinkler.

It now looks like it wants a cut however it is still pretty soft to walk on and I'm worried about leaving dents.

Is it normal to feel soft after three weeks? Guess the generous watering wouldn't help matters! I've cut it down to every couple of days now with the hose only rather than the sprinkler.

    Many thanks!

Looking good. It should be OK to walk on now, give it a cut with the mower set on high. Keep anyone in high heels off of it for the time being.
