  • On the front corner we have rose ' Elfe ' with clematis ' Rhapsody '......Elfe needs, and receives, a lot of surgery during the year.

Betty Corning is super vigorous in my garden. I grow it with Crepuscle which is a very vigorous rose but I have to keep Betty in check to avoid Crepuscle being swamped.

That's glorious Richard. Thanks for posting. I love how the anthers f the clematis are the same colour as the rose. A beautiful acid yellow.

Thanks for the tip! I suppose Crepuscle isn't as vigorous as some, at only 3.5m or so max height. That's precisely why Im asking around for good combinations, as Ive seen how vigorous clems can be and don't want to spend the whole year trying to control one plant as the other is smothered!

Betty Corning wouldn't be so vigorous if grown in a pot. Mine is OK. Pot needs to be quite big though.

Will you put a rose arch around the door? There isn't a lot of space on the walls at the sides.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

You're right, there isn't much space, so I may plant right of the bay and train over the bay and door.

New Dawn was there first.  I planted a Betty Corning in front of it in a pot at first but found that the small flowers of Betty Corning didn't stand out enough against the New Dawn rose.  I saw the pairing of New Dawn with Perle d Azure on a Pinterest page and it looked so lovely I moved Betty and replaced her with Perle, it works much better.

Thanks - very useful to know! I think I'll have to get Perle d"azure. That colour is amazing...
