Any point in netting now?

  • The cage that we have already in another part of the garden is supported by three lengths of alcothene water pipe bent into arches and sunk into the ground.  A small hole was made in the top centre of each arch front to back and then bamboo canes went into the holes to provide lateral support across the top and the whole thing was kind of a long tunnel.  That wouldn't work quite as well on this other bed due to its orientation and location.  Access would be a bit of an issue, but OH is an engineer so I am confident he will find something from in the garage that will make a frame and provide access for me but not the pesky butterflies! :)

  • Those were last year's brassicas. The net was held down with tent pegs and I was able to lift it up at the sides and ends for weeding

  • So, we seem to be more or less at the end of the cabbage white big fat green caterpillars.  Sadly these have now been replaced with stick-insect-like green or brown caterpillars which I believe are called loopers, probably from a moth.

Does anyone know how long I might expect to suffer these for as they are doing a fine job of eating the cavolo nero and are a real pain to find in the curly leaves.   :/
