I've got the plant out and potted it. It has a couple of 'branches' coming from the bottom which are about 3 feet long. I noticed a couple of what look like green shoots (probably leaves) but also a couple of red ones which I think look like roots neat the top of these 'branches'. Would an acer send out a runner to reroot? I'm a bit worried now in case I haven't got all the roots out and I end up with a few of these.
Just done a bit of research and came across wild grapes. The leaves are exactly the same but the branches are alternate whereas on my plant they are opposite.
forget me not...opposite branches is a must for your id. Even if wild grapes leaves do look identical .....if the branches are alternate then it cannot be that.
Asarum.....Could well be...new pics of shrub replanted in a pot look very straggly/floppy for Acer. Viburnum opulus has opposite branches so that would fit.
Ok I can cross off wild grapes then. I've googled Viburnum opulis and that looks like a very good contender. Even found a picture of a straggly plant the same as mine but smaller. I like the look of the flowers but it looks as if it might grow too big so it'll have to stay in a pot. If I remember I'll let you know how it turns out. Thank you for all your help.
