It has a long thin stalk about 4 feet high and the 'branches' go off one either side (in the same place) and are about 1 foot wide each. I found it behind a dogwood. Not sure if it's some type of weed or if a bird 'planted' it.
I've just googled the first one which suggests a type of ivy. I'd say definitely not ivy. I've got 2 acers in my garden. Definitely not that either. Looks a bit more like a creeper than a tree. It doesn't stand by itself but is leaning against the fence.
Right...we can rule out any sort of creeper/vine. That is a sapling.....a very young tree...a young Acer/maple tree. That is perfectly normal to have branches in 2's. That is called opposite branches. (as opposed to alternate.)
Yes, mine are acer palmatum. Hmm, this is very interesting. I guess one of the birds put it there. Think I'd better get it out. It is hidden behind a dogwood so there's not much room for it. I've got a few trees in pots so might pop it in one and see what happens. Thank you for your help with this.

There are 100's of different Acers sp.
Maybe forget-me-not you have 2 x Acer palmatum which have very different leaves.
Just to show you how varied Acer leaves can be ...this is Acer carpinifolium that has leaves that look like Hornbeam.
