I have been to the garden centre today and saw lots of Sorbus trees for sale. Are these the same as the native Ash? i did Google it while there and it says a Sorbus is a mountain ash! I nearly bought one but remembered what you guys had been saying about Ash in the forum!!! So what's the difference and why are they selling them if they are such a problem?

That's the problem with common names.  Mountain ash, as you know, is one of the sorbus family of trees.  It's called mountain ash presumably for its similar leaves but is otherwise not the same.

The ash which has the new problem is in the fraxinus family.

Oh ok, so does that mean it would be ok to buy the Sorbus tree? It's very pretty and lovely leaves but I was worried if get heaps of ash seedlings popping up everywhere?

I'm highly allergic to mountain ash (and silver birch) , didn't know till I visited someone at our local hospital, took them outside for some air and a beautiful 60 foot specimen across the lawn in full flower had me running back inside eyes streaming and coughing. So if you have anyone allergic to tree pollen beware.

Yes Bagpuss but be careful of variety as some get much bigger than others and there are different coloured berries too such as sorbis cahmiriana - https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/17546/Sorbus-cashmiriana-Hedl/Details

There was one on GW a couple of years ago with the most gorgeous copper coloured berries and autumn foliage.  Copper Kettle I think it was.
