I have a beautiful new chilli plant in a new planter showing luvvly new red chilli babies but there's a troop of sausage-sized slugs inching nearer to it.....dont want to use slug pellets. Help !?
A brick, but shut your eyes. Okay, don't do that as you will find slug all over yourself. A sharp knife across the middle. Come back in an hour, and their friends will be there. Do them too.
Dispatching them quickly [scissors] is the easiest way without doubt. Birds or other creatures, like wasps, will snaffle them up. All part of the cycle of life. Starting early in the growing year helps too - you can reduce the numbers a fair bit that way. Putting them in the bin can work, but they like to hover round the edge in a bid to escape Stewy! They often do if the bin lid isn't secure... Nematodes are very good, but the difficulty is that you need to do it at the right time, and in the right conditions. For me, the ground's too cold at the time I'd need to apply. I'm not sure it would be very easy to apply in containers, and it would need to be done early enough - not once the greedy bandits are already there
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
