Bathroom to garden?

I bought a fern to put in my bathroom about a year ago,and it has gone mad,it needs repotting I think, though I haven't taken it out yet.If I split it,can I put some in the garden?Ferns in the garden die off anyway,is there a difference?

Yes.  Some are hardy, some aren't.  Some like dry conditions and others need a moist atmosphere.  Do you know the name of yours?

  • No,it was just a little cheapie from Lidl, they tend not to name things very well, but it loves moisture,it stands in water, and it gets a good spray every now and then.I suppose I could try a bit in the garden, not put the whole thing in? My garden is quite damp here in Wales.

I doubt that will be hardy, but without any correct labelling, there's only one way of finding out, and that's to plant it outside.
Or a part of it.   :)

Try posting a pic to see if anyone can identify it.

  • @Obelixx I don't have that facility on my old Kindle,I must update myself sometime! Generally I'm away with the Fairies and don't have any interest in computing!!Having said that,I would love to be able to post pics as the garden looks nice.

  • @Fairygirl as they all die down in winter, would it be a case of the roots rotting away? Presumably outdoor fern roots are able to cope?

I suggest you look at ferns online and see if you can find one that matches yours so you can look up its cultivation needs and hardiness

  • Looks very much like the Boston Fern, says indoor or out but of course it's American,so it could be like a mild Spanish climate, they've shown it in a big pot by a door outside! I will look into it more.

This site says it needs a cool, moist environment and indirect light - https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/boston-fern/boston-fern-care.htm

Definitely a houseplant.   May be possible to divide it and give some to friends?
