Help....I have holes in my grass.....

The problem is over the past few years my grass has really deteriorated and I have just noticed today that there are big holes all over my grass as if something has dug there way out from under the grass.....please see photos....what do you think it could be? I am quite concerned as my 7 year old son loves playing in the garden, it would be a shame to disallow him.

    Apparently some bees do this

Hi Heather, you don't say what size the holes are or how deep? You might be interested to read this thread anyway

The fact that there is earth round the entrance suggests they are more than depressions, have you checked the depth?

Bumbles will use old mice nests (they are attracted by the scent of urine) but they wouldn’t be very deep plus you would notice lots of activity, same with mining bees.

Not seen any bees, just the odd 1 which I'm sure is normal.

I would say they are around 1cm, not sure on depth will check later.

Thank you so far for your replies 🙂

I'm wondering whether it could be ants making ventilation tunnels to cool their nests in the recent hot weather.

Do you have ants in your lawn?

The ‘dug’ soil looks quite a lot like that when I enlarged the picture

That could be moles, they come up for air every so often and don’t always make a big mound of soil.  Our cat has been known to catch them when they just do that.  Put your fingers down there and see if they travel a good way and join up with the others.

    Hi @NewBoy2 :)
We had a lot of spam on the forum first thing this morning ... I was up early  open_mouth so tried to 'bump' recent threads up above the spam ... if I didn't have anything constructive to say (or couldn't think of anything at the time, it was very early) I just posted 'bump' which is sort of a convention on here, as anything  you say will bump the thread up to the top of the front page.
