I used to do work at a garden where she'd planted a C. Armandii by the front door and a window. It had a 2ft wide bit of wall , 6ft high before it hit the porch canopy.
I couldn't make her understand there was nothing I could do to contain/ keep it flowering.
    Wrong plant , wrong place.

@sabeeha, If you think your montana has to go, but you'd like a different clematis to replace it,I'm sure @Richard Hodsoncould help you if you know the sort of colour, size etc that would fit.

  • Some good advice on here re pruning this plant, but it is only a temporary option, the root ball is getting larger all the time.  So pruning is necessary regularly.

Do you recommend replacing it, Richard Hodson?

At the moment, I have just moved, and in spite of there being absolutely loads to do in the house, still find myself venturing outside! So as such, I am only maintaining things at the moment.

If things don't pan out, which clematis would you suggest for a south facing front garden?
  • Very useful and interesting thread.Thankyou all.

@sabeeha if you want to ensure someone gets your message/question you need to put an @ before their name, then they will know they have been 'called'
  • In Winter, when the plant is dormant, it would be possible to dig the root out.   Chop the whole plant hard back, dig it out and plant it somewhere else, or give it to someone who has enough room to enjoy this type of clematis.  It will never be ' right ' there, it will just keep on growing.

Then tell us all what colour of clematis you would like to replace it with, height, flowering period, aspect, and I am sure you will get plenty of positive feedback from these pages.
