Does it grow well from seed Dove? Thinking it may work on the allotment next year. Assume the bronze leaved tastes similar but looks better?

Grows beautifully from seed @debs64. I usually sow a few seeds in modules in the cold frame and scatter the rest of the seed in the garden where I want it to grow. Belt and braces principle. Usually both methods work as well as each other. 🙂

Thanks Dove. Now that I have my greenhouse on the allotment I am planning to grow lots of plants from seeds next year. Hubby was saying roasted fennel was delicious and I like the idea of bronze foliage. Will give it a go!

Ah ... you need a different fennel for roasted fennel ... you need seeds of Florence fennel not the herb fennel. Florence fennel swells at the base to form the bulb-like vegetable. The herb fennel doesn’t swell.

Ive not grown Florence fennel ... I keep meaning to give it a try cos we love it.

I meant  to say that I’ve found fennel doesn’t like being transplanted cos it has a long tap root so that’s why I sow it in modules so I can transplant it carefully without it noticing.

The extended heatwave may have something to do with the colour change perhaps?

Maybe it is the bleaching effect of the sun plus the effect of a brightly lit photo?
