Verbena Hybrida

I know the tall variety of Verbena will over winter outside as I have some.
Some I grew from seed were rigida, will they overwinter too?
But should I take cuttings of the Hybrida which are all different colours, and are lower growing? I've decided to use these instead of the dreaded Lobelia in pots next year, they stood up to the storms much better.

I discovered by accident that they root really easily in water.
I snipped off a flowering stem by accident and stuck it in  ,glass of water. Within two days it had rooted!

  • That's one of the reasons I love them! You can get so many plants from one......brilliant! Have you overwintered yours B3 ?

I have Verbena rigida grown from seed many years ago. In my garden (in Kent) so far it has always come back but is very late to come through, then flowers on to hard frosts.  Some years more of it comes back than others.

If you are thinking of growing rigida..then my advice would be to not grow. It is witout doubt the most intrusive thing in the garden...can't get rid of the stuff !!
  • Oh dear, too late,it's been in all summer! But because the Cosmos haven't flowered it's just as well,as the Verbena have come up through the foliage! Every cloud......

No. I've only started growing them. I've got a beautiful blue one that , by chance is in a container with a blue and white fuchsia. It looks great.
I will definitely use them as my trailers instead of lobelia etc.
I might save some cuttings in the porch in small pots. I haven't got a greenhouse.

I guess it depends on your soil - not invasive in my garden.
  • That's interesting B3,Youve obviously got the same idea as me,I don't have a GH,but have a light porch.I think they will be much better than Lobelia. The blue sounds nice,I've got a beautiful purple one,as well as a peaches and cream mix.I'm keen to try out your way of doing cuttings, thank you for that.

My hanging baskets are going over may take some cuttings for next year worth a try isn't it?
  • I fiddled about with bringing on Lobelia, now after the heavy rain I've had to chop them back to nothing! Not worth the faff of growing, when the Verbena are so sturdy under onslaught of rain!
