Well the 2 garden centres near me and the B&Q didn't have a great choice so I'll probably just find a couple of plants online.
Are there likely to be more varieties closer to Autumn at garden centres in general? I note a lot of sellers online have things only as 'available from early Autumn' at the minute.
Yes, there should be more choice coming in September. if you want a matching pair, I would not buy them online - you really need to see them and choose the nearest match, which is not as easy as it sounds. If it's very windy, you don't need tall plants or tall pots or standards as the wind will just blow them over. Have you got room for half-barrels? I have a big box ball in a pot 50 cms high and slightly tapering up to a 50cm diameter and a bush olive tree in the same size pot. Both withstand the high winds we have here and the very cold weather, although the olive bush is tucked into the corner to give it a bit more protection. if you do want a tall pot, you could put a half breeze block in it to give it some weight at the bottom, although by so doing you will lose some room for the roots.
Not necessarily. You can get some cheap everyday evergreens, keep them well looked after, trimmed, fed and watered and they'll look just as good as more expensive plants. As for pots, have a look around and see what you can get for your budget.
Garden centres will be having their sales pretty soon to make room for christmas stock, a great time to splurge on new pots, especially the bigger sized ones
I had second thoughts last night after posting. If you'd rather something more modern looking, a squarish lower pot than those I mentioned above is not so easily knocked over by wind. They would look good with matching conical shaped conifers (unless you don't like conifers of course!)
I bought a couple of skimmia a few weeks ago now after waiting for the right opportunity but, having bought a set of hexagonal planters, might have something different in mind for one of them.
Was at the garden centre today though and they had 2 bux balls that looked very nice and these junipers-
Reckon they would look quite good either side of the door with a bux.
Had been concerned about height with the wind but they were pretty heavy as is, never mind when I'd pot them.

I suppose the main thing with getting a larger pot/barrel means quite an expensive plant to fit it.
