I have examined this photo carefully several times and still can't see the BCG mark.

If it wasn’t called Ecover it was a forerunner delivered to our door by the fortnightly whole foods delivery van. Thinking back its name  did change around the late 70s can’t remember what it used to be calledbut the formulation was pretty much the same whatever it’s name was.

Ecover isn't anything clever, really (considering the price). Detergents based on plant extracts have been around for as long as there have been detergents. Brand names come and go but the stuff in the box is the same

Exactly Rgirl :)  .... living out in the sticks we would’ve used whichever brand the whole food store was delivering that week. Eventually Ecover became the most widely available brand in most such shops.  The principle of my actions in 1976 was the same whichever brand it was that month.

My lovely washing and dishwasher repair blokey says that Ecover is a bit of a disaster for actually cleaning things. And all eco-y products. They don't kill things very well (as the name suggests) and combined with eco-efficient machines that wash on low temps mean that much bacteria tend to live and build up in their warms and cosy homes. He recommended using a regular soap, on the highest heat setting, once a month to keep your machine clean. I do that now.

Ah well there you are ... when I say it works for us I’m talking about one of us (usually OH) standing at the sink with a mop, sponge and a bowl of hot water ... not loading it into a machine  ;). and it certainly did no harm to my hedge when watered with it ,  which was my point.

My OH is a bit obsessive about washing up. I have dubbed him Pontius Plate.
