If the garden is really important to you, you should seriously think about not buying a new build. Gardens are reluctantly tacked on as an afterthought. If you buy an older house you will get a bigger garden and you can check how much sun it will get in person rather than trying to guess.
We are still in our old house much to my husband's disgust because although we really want to move I have not found a house yet where the garden is up to scratch and I can't bear to go to a small dark garden from my lovely plot. I just can't compromise it is too important to me. So I don't think you are weird although your other half might
Our back garden faces NNE. I was really worried about this before we moved, but I'm so glad now -especially in this weather! If it faced south we'd have to put up an umbrella or something anyway. I would say though that the garden is very long so there is always, sun if you want to sit in it. Well - If it's out anyway.
If I moved I would love a west facing window so that I could see the sun set. If the garden is your priority, I agree that it's bed to look at older houses.
