Belgian winters get to -20C in a normal year and sometimes worse.  Cold greenhouse but bubble wrapped inside and facing full south with a 2m hedge protecting it from prevailing westerlies and a tree and a holly hedge helping keep easterlies off.

It wasn't restricted when I put it in the ground but the soil was not rich in that corner and I didn't improve it much.  Just a scattering of pelleted chicken manure in spring a,d a good watering when I had the hosepipe round there for other plants in the GH in summer.

In this new garden we have a whopper of a fig tree that produces masses of fruits but the minute they get to walnut size the bloody starlings swoop in and scoff the lot while they're still green.   Humph!
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

    Thanks for the advice.
I have a GH but no intention to move it into there.
I think this summer is as good as it gets heat wise so if they don't ripen this year they never will so I will remove it.
